Its rate of exchange is approximately 6290 riels for one euro (2008), a not very important black market of the currency exists, the American dollar is accepted everywhere at the rather stable rate of 4000 riels for a dollar (2008).

In 2000, the emission of coins of 100, 200 and 500 riels was tried but they did not circulate and the experiment was abandoned. Before that, in 1994, coins of 50,100,200 and 500 riels had been emises.

The temple of Angkor Wat, a complex three times larger than suspected
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The urban complex around the temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia was three times larger than suspected, according to an international team of archaeologists who surveyed the subsurface using radar NASA reveal their work published Monday in the United States.
The city built around Angkor, which was the capital of the Khmer empire between the 9th and the 16th century, extended over nearly 3,000 square kilometers. This area makes it the largest urban development in the pre-industrial era, eclipsing by far the Mayan cities like Tikal in Guatemala. This complex had the potential to feed a population of 500,000 people, according to the authors of the study published in the Annals of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) dated August 13.
Archaeologists trying to establish the boundaries of the urbanization around Angkor in Siel Reap province since the 50s. But this research has been hampered by residential construction and modern farming. In 2000, this group of archaeologists Cambodian, French and Australian asked NASA, the U.S. space agency to assist in this project with its radar satellites in orbit. Images provided by these radars, which are capable of entering the basement, have found traces of ancient roads, canals and ponds. By combining these radar images, shots of aircraft and Surveying, the archaeologists have found the location of thousands of pools and 74 temples.
They concluded that the network of irrigation Canneaux allowed to feed crops of rice extending 20 to 25 kilometers north and south of Angkor to Lake Tonle Sap. These studies have also found clues that tend to confirm the theory that an environmental disaster caused the collapse of the Khmer civilization in the 14th century. Overpopulation, deforestation and erosion of topsoil combined with floods could have had catastrophic consequences for the medieval population, say the authors of this study, Christophe Pottier of the French School of Far East in Siem Reap Cambodia.

Road Infrastructure Outside the cities and major roads, highways and bridges are often damaged or cut during the rainy season.
Convenience stores are rare and it is recommended to move two vehicles.
The network of long distance coaches has grown considerably between Phnom Penh and major provincial cities.
It should however be noted that excessive speed of these buses is potentially dangerous and accident rates. Moreover, these services are very poorly covered by insurance companies.
Traffic accidents: Freedom of movement is complete but the means of locomotion rarely meet Western safety standards.
The road network is still poor outside major areas (Phnom Penh - Battambang, Phnom Penh - Siem Reap, Phnom Penh - Sihanoukville / Kompong Som). Traffic is chaotic.
A indiscipline of drivers, plus a widespread ignorance of the rules of conduct and signaling. In Phnom Penh, the increasing number of vehicles has resulted in a significant increase in traffic accidents, particularly those involving motorbikes.
Helmet use by the driver as the passenger is essential, as the underwriting of insurance coverage for liability and damage suffered or committed (crimes leak very frequent). Network Rail The rail network is in very poor condition and train travel are long and uncomfortable.
Only two routes: Phnom-Penh/Port Sihanoukville / Kompong Som and Phnom-Penh/Sisophon (to Thailand) function.
River Network Most boats providing transportation of passengers between Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Stung Treng and Vietnam do not meet safety standards, (see section in "General Safety" boards to get to Angkor).
